Our Rooms
Active Explorers Rolleston has four separate rooms, enabling us to deliver age appropriate experiences for children at each different age and stage.
Koru Room
The koru symbolises new beginnings, and our Koru Room caters for children aged 0 to approximately 2 years of age. At around 2, children begin transitioning into the next room and will move to this area when the child, staff and whanau feel they are ready. Babies and infants have very specific needs which are special to each individual. Our staff ensure they feel loved and secure by offering primary caregiving in a safe and nurturing environment. This ensures they have the ability to form strong connecting links between home and preschool. Routines throughout the day are based on each child and their personal routines at home.
We support our little ones to visualise and explore the world around them in a safe and loving environment, encouraging growth and development, self-esteem, curiosity, co-operation and respect through child-directed and child-centred play.
A baby is born with a need to be loved and never outgrows it.
Nga Whetu Iti Room
Nga Whetu means ‘star’ in Te Reo, signifying that each child in this room is a bright and individual shining star. This room accommodates children aged from approximately 3 - 4 years with a focus on 16 children. Transitions into and from this area are dependent on the children and whanau readiness to move and space availability within the Purerehua area (4 year old room). From this room the children begin the process of learning skills that help them manage their own care routines, and support them with the kai routines. New resources in this room cater to this engaging and interesting age.
Staff ensure the programme is fun and creative. Young children love to explore, this is an age where they learn significantly through play, curiosity and physical activity. Every child will be offered a wide range of fun learning activities encouraging use of their senses and extending physical motor skills. Our programme focuses on ‘play with purpose’. Many varied experiences and challenges are offered daily, such as dressing up, painting, creativity, building, group activities, music and dance.
We aim to work in an environment of mutual and genuine respect, trust and partnership. Self-help skills are encouraged and supported by our team of dedicated and enthusiastic staff. It is important to us that your child progresses well whilst in our care and we invite you to work with us in helping your child to develop to their full potential. We encourage your input and always want to hear about the progress your child is making at home.
Excuse the mess, children are making memories.
Nga Whetu Nui Room
Nga Whetu means ‘star’ in Te Reo, signifying that each child in this room is a bright and individual shining star. This room accommodates children aged from approximately 2 - 3 years with a focus on 24 children. This allows us to ensure we provide a calm and respectful environment to our younger children, particularly those that transition from our nursery, into this area. The focus of the room is on care routines, supporting children with kai times, sleep times and enjoying a curriculum that allows them to explore and develop new skills that support this busy toddler age.

Purerehua Room
Our Purerehua room caters for children approximately 4 years of age and above. Purerehua means butterfly in Te Reo and we feel this perfectly summarises each child’s progression from a caterpillar into a confident butterfly. This is the age where your child will experience rapid learning and growth, and our preschool programme is designed to encourage children to develop to their full potential, reach new levels, and prepare them for the next important journey in their life – school. The programme supports independence, group and individual learning experiences. The emphasis is on learning activities that are lots of fun and at the same time build character, self-confidence and self-esteem.
We have a strong focus on assisting children in discovering who they are, so that they can learn to express their own opinions and nurture their ideas. Educators work alongside children to develop their individual interests and extend further learning. By encouraging collaboration and group work, children and educators will develop an environment that enhances confidence and competence. All children are given the opportunity to participate in an age appropriate group extension programme which promotes numeracy, literacy, technology, turn taking and independence in preparation for their transition to school.
Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.
