Little Scientists Surface Tension experiment
This week for little scientists we looked at surface tensions- this is when water droplets form on top of surfaces.
The tamariki used pipettes to put drops of water carefully onto the top of a coin to see how this worked, by putting the water carefully on the coin the tamariki were able to see how the water remained on top of their coins and the illusion this created.
For the next activity tamariki used the pipettes to add water to different items, including sponges, laminated paper and two different types of sand, one that we find at the beach and the other kinetic sand.
During this experiment the Tamariki learned about how the different items are “hydrophobic “ meaning that water repels off the items or if they absorb the water due to the lack of attraction to it.
The next experiment, tamariki used pipettes to put coloured water drops onto grease paper, then using a straw to blow the water droplets together to mix different colours.
Little scientists finished with Rachel doing an experiment with a vacuum bottle that had holes in the bottle. The tamariki watched as Rachel opened the bottle and made the water come out the bottle but when the bottle was closed the holes didn’t leak.
Check back next week to see what experiments the Tamariki explore.
We have Little scientists in the Kaiarahi room every Tuesday
